EAHA is committed to helping refugee children who are living in one of the world’s worst crisis-affected countries access basic education.

Most refugee children in Sudan do not have access to formal education through government schools. This is partly because schools in Sudan are already overwhelmed trying to meet the needs of local populations. This has become much worse since the civil war began in 2023 and many millions of Sudanese people have been forced to flee their homes, sometimes taking refuge in school grounds that have been repurposed as shelter. Since August 2024, Sudan has been experiencing a devastating famine.

Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.

Nelson Mandela

While the humanitarian crisis in Sudan has made things much worse, Eritrean refugees who have lived in the country for many years have already come up with their own solutions. Many refugee community-run schools were established and have been operating since the 1970s, funded through whatever small contributions families can make to enrol their children there. Teachers have given their time and skills to teach the next generation, even when there has been little or no pay.

Organisations like EAHA have been supporting these refugee community-run schools for many years. This is because our organisation is led by people who have been in these situations themselves – who have been teachers, students, or whose own children have benefitted from these schools before coming to Australia. We know how fundamentally important these schools are for community resilience. We also know support from people in lucky countries like Australia is vital to the ongoing sustainability of these schools, especially as refugee families’ resources are depleted by the deteriorating situation in Sudan.

EAHA also knows that our support is effective. EAHA is able to communicate directly with the principals and teachers running these schools and with the families whose children learn there. We ensure that 100 per cent of funds we raise go directly to the operational costs of running these schools – to paying rent, buying school supplies, and ensuring that teachers are paid for their time and can focus on the children without having to find other ways to make money to support their own families. EAHA is able to send funds directly to the schools in secure ways – through remittance companies that are trusted and are operating well in these areas, and with clear transparency and accountability required of any school we support.

By contributing to EAHA’s work, you will be helping to support a resilient, determined community facing an unimaginably difficult situation, and who are striving to ensure that their children do not miss out on the chance to learn.

  if (typeof hasAmeliaEntitiesApiCall === 'undefined' && ('' === '' && '' !== '1')) {
    var hasAmeliaEntitiesApiCall = true;
  }
  var ameliaShortcodeData = (typeof ameliaShortcodeData === 'undefined') ?
